45 Year-Old Mother of Three Sings at Surf Lodge
By Linda Lee–
It wasn’t the usual crowd at the Surf Lodge on July 13. By that we mean that Jeremy Piven, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cynthia Rowley, Jane Krakowski, the architect David Rockwell and the influencer Mei Kwok turned out at sunset to hear a middle-aged woman perform songs from her debut album.
The fact that she was the daughter of a famous actress, was a well-known actress herself and had introduced some of the songs on “The Tonight Show,” and “Howard Stern” probably gave the release of her album, “Glorious,” a head start in May.
In any case, there she was, Kate Hudson, wearing a tiered lace dress by Stella McCartney that had an awkward train. The thigh-high suede boots Hudson chose to wear with the dress seemed to present a kind of war with the train. She also had on tiny denim shorts. It seemed at some points she wanted to rip the train off the dress because it was getting in the way of the moves she was trying to make. She kept kicking it out of the way.
And it was a hot day, which was undoing her beachy waves and hair extensions. And the sound system did not seem to be carrying her voice nearly as well as the set up the night before at Webster Hall. But outdoor sound is always difficult.
Nevertheless, the crowd was happy to see her, and there were as many cameras as hands in the air.
Gwyneth Paltrow, dressed in a black halter top, marched through the crowd giving enthusiastic arm pumps for her friend, in a kind of come-on-people gesture.
As night came on Hudson was followed by DJ Anderson .Paak (also known as DJ Pee .Wee), who pumped up the volume.
