COMING ATTRACTIONS
The Hampton International Film Festival October 3 – 13
Tickets went on sale on September 3 for the kind of pass that lets you feel like you walk through walls. (Of course if you are a movie star, or a producer, you can get an industry pass and do that already.) But if you are a rich dentist and just love movies, here is your chance. For $2,500, you can get a pass (for one) to go to parties, receptions, talks, opening nights. And of course those hard-to-get-into screenings. Go to this site and sign up for the Founders Pass. For less (much less) you can get 12 tickets First Dibs Pass ($800) or 6 tickets Companion Pass ($250). But get this.

“Blue Moon” is a period musical starring Ethan Hawke and Margaret Qually that follows the lives of Lorenz Hart, Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein and includes opening night of “Oklahoma,” written by Rogets and Hammerstein.
You can pay now for these passes, but you cannot chose the movies until later. The difference between first dibs and companion is nil. September 16 versus September 18. If you are serious about seeing the most in demand movies, they will probably be the musical-thriller “Kiss if the Spider Woman” with Jenifer Lopez, Richard Linklater’s “Blue Moon,” a musical with Ethan Hawke and Margaret Qualley, and “Eternity,” a fantasy/romantic comedy on opening night. Movies in large theaters are the easiest, of course. Small screenings with stars present, the hardest.

Jennifer Lopez stars in “Kiss if the Spider Woman,” with Diego Luna, based on a stage musical. For those with a Bennifer obsession, Ben Affleck was an executive producer. It gets high marks on Rotten Tomatoes.
It could be that some Bulgarian drama comes out of nowhere and becomes the biggest hit of the year. It’s time to study as if you need to pass the bar exam, and then jump in and see if you can get a ticket for the movie you want. (Hint: see what happens this week at the Toronto Film Festival.) Otherwise, tickets are $15. And if you think documentaries are easy, think again.
GO PICK SOMETHING
Of course, you think, it’s FALL. But it’s not , like, fall apple and pumpkin picking season yet. You can still pick tomatoes, and peaches continue to be in season. This is a perfect time to make raratouille. At Lewin’s Farm there are still peppers and eggplants to pick. The corn maze is already up. And, actually, apples are ready to pick. But no, no pumpkins are ready. Not yet.
.To get to Lewin Farms , about an hour from East Hampton – go to Riverhead, follow 25 and then 25A toward Wading River. In Wading River, when 25A turns left, take the right on Sound Avenue. The Lewin Farmstand is right there. The various orchards and farm fields are different distances from that point. They will give you directions. Or you can just buy a lot of produce, pies cakes and other things, including ice cream, at the Farm Store.

Yes, they have some tomatoes. The kind that ripen on the vine, not the kind that are gassed in a warehouse and then shipped a thousand miles. Worth trying.
While you are in Wading River you might drive a few more miles on 25A to visit the Tesla Science Center, nine minutes away. This is the real Tesla, Nikola Tesla, the Serbian inventor and engineer. He planned to build his last laboratory on this site. Tesla was a visionary. Some say he was a fantasist. But much of what he predicted a hundred years ago is now fact. Bonus: the area is filled with good restaurants. East Hampton to Wading River is 40 miles. But it’s a pretty drive, and why not? This is a quiet time of year, and that is an interesting part of the North Shore to explore.
