DE DO RAND RAND RAND, DE DO RAND RAND
— The weather was perfect for Bradford Rand’s August 2 Concours d’Elegance. VIP registrants, those with Ferraris and Porsches in competition, were welcomed at 9 am on Lumber Lane in Bridgehampton with complimentary Telmont Champagne flutes from Rémy Martin, and with warm regards from Rand himself and his staff. It was his most successful Concours ever, with more than 700 guests.

Among them were the owners of the property on which the Concours was held, Ken and Maria Fishel, along with their son, Bradley and his wife, Alexandra; the author Candace Bushnell; Dina Lohan (mother of Lindsay Lohan) and her daughter, Aliana; the fashion designer Nicole Miller and her son, Palmer Taipale; the television personality Luann de Lesseps; the Miami hotelier Alan Lieberman and his realtor wife, Diane, who have a home in Water Mill; Chris Teakle, the Executive Director of the Southampton Animal Shelter, a beneficiary of profits from the Concours; and more.

There were more than $100-million-worth of cars on display, including the ones in competition and those on the field. The competition cars were Ferraris and Porsches, including an F40, La Ferrari, SP3 and a 1974 Dino GTS and a 1962 356B Outlaw Coupe, 1988 930 Slant Nose Flachbau and a 1971 911 Magnus Walker Outlaw. Chase Rand, Bradford Rand’s son, awarded the Young Entrepreneurs Award to a white Lamborghini, the iconic 1984 White Countach, which was displayed in the “butterfly” position.

Other autos on the field included Bentleys, McLarens, Austin Martins and Rolls-Royces. Also on the field was a car that definitely stood out, a shocking pink Ferrari 360 Spyder that was voted by Bushnell as the Sexiest Car at the show.

Why would this particular Ferrari be considered a sexy road car? Well, it’s comfortable and has luxurious interiors. Just the kind of car that a “Sex and the City” girl would like. Bushnell, remember, was the author of the original “Sex in the City” series, which became the book, which became the smash television series. She did not outline the exact qualities that might have made this Ferrari the sexiest car at the show, but we can guess.

It’s capable of high speeds with minimal road noise. It has a distinctive sound, powerful acceleration and responsive handling. Plus, on a beautiful day, like the one of this Concours, the top opens and off you go. Sue Hrib is an entrepreneur with roots in the Atlanta music scene. And her tequila is targeted at women. A number of women took turns getting behind the wheel. We did not see a single man try it.
A pink car certainly stood out in rows of Ferraris in seried ranks of more conventional colors.

Other notable guests included Christopher Gravagna, a serial entrepreneur; Ruth Miller; Lauren Day and Bob Roberts, who built a fortune with his first wife, Lucille Roberts, based on her chain of womens’ health clubs; the actress Leesa Rowland; Jordan Lippner, the chairman of the board of Board of Directors of the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation, with his wife, the veterinarian Dr. Jennifer Jablow, and too many sports stars to mention.

Besides all of the hyper-luxurious cars, Bradford Rand’s Concours is known for the top-shelf brands he attracts: Coming back for the umpteenth time was Rémy Martin’s Louis XIII, which offered private cognac tastings. Elsewhere there were stands dedicated to Staple Gin from Rachael Ray, Añejo from Privada, Mezcal from Mezcalum, The Macallan and hand-rolled cigars from COHIBA.

Oh, and other things that might catch a wandering eye or ear: jewelry, watches and … did anyone hear barking? As we said, some proceeds go to the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation. Which is why there a mobile adoption unit. Staff members, being clever had loaded it with with squirming puppies, some pit bulls and some that looked like beagles.

While some people were considering what kind of car would be their next purchase, others in the party were considering a warmer option. There was still time in the day to buy a leash, a collar and some puppy food. (The danger of bringing children with you to the Concours!)
There were also stylist sunglasses from Ferrari, Ray-Ban, Oliver Peoples and Persol, all being offered by OPTYX luxury eyewear of New York.
What else… popsicles, ice cream cones, or were those cones filled with cream and caviar? There were little salads in boxes, and individual dishes with little wooden forks. Waiters and waitresses served a catered lunch for those who had time to sit down and eat.
People were giddy with pleasure. — Linda Lee
